Barbarian Gold Review
Join the powerful and rugged Barbarian in his search for gold and riches in a brutal medieval world filled with enemies and foes of all kinds. Iron Dog is back with another visually pleasing title, although the glossy cartoonish style is a bit too “disney” for this kind of theme, in our opinion. Still, the math model underneath it all packs a solid enough punch to make this an attractive title. Barbarian Gold comes with a 2 level free spins round, as well as expanding wilds both in the base game and during said bonus round, although the latter has a few more goodies up its sleeve.
The game plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 paylines, and you can play across all devices and platforms, making mobile and tablet play a breeze. The base game comes with expanding wilds, and they land surprisingly often for a medium to high volatility game. Of course, the base game offers only 500x your stake at the most, but you can win up to 10,000x your stake in the elaborate free spins bonus round. The latter is really what this game is all about, but the expanding wilds will help you stay afloat until it finally triggers.
We got the bonus round organically a couple of times in our 200 spins test session (read all about it further down in the review), and we also bought it a few times to try to get to the second level. This turned out to be pretty hard, but the first level is pretty solid in and of itself. The big difference is that you cannot get extra spins in level 1, but you’ll still benefit from the progressive multiplier that increases for every expanding wild you land. Iron Dog is not changing the world with this title, but it’s still a solid enough effort that certainly has its “golden” moments.

What are the bonus features?
Barbarian Gold is not exactly a feature heavy game, but what you do find can certainly land you some very solid payouts. The bit attraction is the bonus round, but we’ll start with the base game features first.
The wild symbol is a shield with a golden W depicted on it, and it will step in for all regular symbols as it usually does. Whenever you land a wild symbol on the top position of the reel, it will drop down to cover the whole reel.
You can land more than one wild at the same time, of course, and this can create multiple wild reels that can give you some nice base game wins.Free spins in Barbarian GoldThe free spins bonus round comes with 2 levels in Barbarian Gold slot, and you trigger it by landing 3, 4 or 5 animal skull scatters anywhere on the same spin. You start out with the Lava Cave bonus round, and you get either 8, 10 or 12 free spins (depending on how many scatters you triggered the feature with).
The expanding wild feature is in play here too, but with a little twist to spice things up a bit. Whenever you land a wild in a top position on the reels it will not only expand, but also increase the progressive multiplier by +1. The multiplier does not reset at all, and it will keep building as long as you land more expanding wilds.
To get to the next level, you need to land 3, 4 or 5 scatters within the Lava Cave free spins feature. This will trigger the Gold Cave bonus round, and you’ll start out with 4, 5 or 6 free spins, respectively. Here you’ll also increase the multiplier by landing expanding wilds, but in addition you get 1 extra free spin whenever you land an expanding wild.
Depending on your jurisdiction, it’s also possible to buy the bonus round in this game. In the top right-hand side corner you’ll see a green/brown “Buy Free Spins” button, and you get 8 spins for 100x, 10 spins for 150x and 12 spins for 200x your stake. Not exactly cheap, but at least you don’t have to wait to trigger it organically if you don’t feel like it.
How to play
It’s not very hard to get into this game at all, but we’ll still walk you through everything you need to know.
Experienced punters might wanna skim through this, or skip it altogether. Beginners, however, should probably pay some attention, as the game interface is a bit out of the ordinary here. For example, the hamburger menu opens up the game settings and history, and nothing else. You’ll find the hamburger menu up in the top left-hand side corner, and it takes you right into the game settings at first. Here you can toggle on/off the background music and sound effects, and also choose if you want fast play, spacebar to spin and the splash screen when the game loads.
Game workflowTo get to the paytable you need to click the . icon down below the reels, as this opens up another set of menus on the right-hand side. The “i” icon menu is the game rules here, although it’s usually the paytable in most games.
The game rules are a formal description of everything in the game, and you need to click the trophy icon to get to the actual paytable. Here you can check out how much each symbol is worth in different combinations, and also read about the different bonus features. The paytable is static, and you need to divide each value by the number of paylines (20) to see how much each symbol combination pays per total stake. The Barbarian is the highest value symbol here, and he pays out 12.5x your stake for 5 on a payline.
Click the coin stacks icon to choose your bet level between 20p and £20 per spin, and you can also choose if you want to see cash or coin values displayed when you play. You can set up the autoplay feature with between 5 and 999 autospins, and there are numerous options for the feature to stop automatically. That’s it, you are now ready to join the Barbarian and hunt for the precious gold.

The 200 Spins Barbarian Gold Experience
The savage barbarian theme is not really the biggest turn on for this reviewer, but we still liked the math model of this game and the massive potential of the bonus round. We set the bet level to £1 per spin as usual, and loaded up the autoplay feature to get started with our 200 spins test session.
The base game does not really hold the biggest potential here, and it exists more or less to keep you going towards the free spins feature. We soon realized that you need the expanding wild symbols to get anywhere in the base game, as you’ll land mostly dead spins or minute wins without them.
The good news is that the expanding wilds land quite often, and you will usually see 2 at the time. We landed 3 expanding wilds a few times also, and sometimes only 1 at the time. Either way, the wilds were included in all our larger base game wins, and we usually won between 10 and 20 times our stake with these things.
WinWe had one exceptional base game game win of 46x, and this was due to a double expanding wild on the 2 first reels. Overall, it’s not that hard to keep afloat here, and the medium to high volatility seems to be a fitting description in our somewhat limited experience. We triggered the bonus round after around 60 spins, but won only 13.70x our stake (including the triggering spin) with 1 loasy expanding wild in 8 spins.
Towards the end of the 200 spins session we triggered the bonus round one more time, and now we had a bit more luck. We saw 2 double expanding wilds in the feature, which increased the multiplier to 5x, and we won a total of 108x our stake. Not too shabby, but we were still not quite satisfied.
We really wanted to get to level 2 of the bonus round, but after buying the free spins feature with 12 spins a total of 5 times, we gave up. We won anything from 6.5x to 436x our stake from these sessions, which tells you how varied the outcome can be, but we never came close to triggering the Gold Cave bonus round. At most we landed 1 scatter at the time, so getting there is not exactly an easy task.
Review Summary
The disney style visuals took a while to get used too, but Barbarian Gold is a game that will definitely grow on you. Almost all the potential has been allocated to the bonus round however, as you can “only” win up to 500x your stake in the base game. Reaching the Gold Cave level is key to lengthening the bonus round, and thus hopefully build a multiplier that packs a solid punch, but it’s not an easy feature to trigger.
We managed to build a 9x multiplier in the Lava Cave bonus round though, which gave us the biggest total free spin win of 436x our stake. If you are tempted by the bonus buy option, you should beware that minute bonus round wins can happen just as easily as bigger wins. The base game might not hold a massive potential, but it’s still somewhat entertaining with all the expanding wilds you get. We can perhaps conclude that there is more to this game than what meets the eye.
Pros
- Expanding wilds in the base game
- 2 level free spins feature with progressive multiplier
- Medium to high volatility and 10,000x max win potential
Cons
- Max bet is only £20 per spin

If you have an appetite for a bit of gore, brutality and violence, you’ll have no problem finding slots in that category. Here we’ll present you with some of the better ones we know about, and you can play the free demo and learn more about each game by following the links below.
Conan - comes with 3 different and very exciting bonus rounds, as well as 4 bonus features. The visuals are well-done as usual from NetEnt, and you’ll see a 3D animated Conan fight a massive snake in front of the reels. You can win up to 1,008x your stake here, and there is hardly a boring moment in this game.
Barbarian Fury - is all about the xNudge mechanics from NoLimit City, as you get a progressively increasing multiplier for every wild nudge in the game. The volatility is quite brutal here, more so than the game at hand, but you can also win up to 8,785x your stake. The xNudge multiplier does not reset in the bonus round, which can benefit you in a massive way if you’re lucky.
Vikings - is a branded NetEnt title based around the hit TV series by the same name. The game comes with stunning audiovisuals, and you’ll definitely recognize some of the characters from the show. There are plenty of exciting bonus features in this game too, and the setup changes to 7 reels, 5 rows and 78,125 ways to win during the bonus round.
