Aztec Gold Mines Slot Review, Demo Play, Payout, Free Spins & Bonuses

Aztec Gold Mines is a Minesweeper-inspired release from iSoftBet, and it plays out on a 5x5 grid with a pre-selected number of mines up to 15. The idea is to pick tiles to increase your total win, but revealing a mine ends the round in a loss. You can adjust the difficulty and volatility seamlessly in that regard, and the max win is 288x your stake. Check our full review below the free demo game.

Aztec Gold Mines Review

iSoftBet hasn’t really seen huge success with their previous mine game release, Gold Digger Mines, and with Aztec Gold Mines they’re basically attempting to piggyback on their smash hit, Aztec Gold Megaways. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but the two games can hardly compare except for the somewhat similar audiovisual experience.

No features, modifiers or innovation of any kind has been included in this follow-up release, so Aztec Gold Mines is pretty much a reskin of Gold Digger Mines. It’s all about picking tiles to reveal cash prizes, while avoiding to pick the tile that reveals the round-ending mine. The 288x potential is still very low and unexciting in our view, and something needs to be done to lift the whole Mine Games concept to the next level.

Aztec Gold Mines Game Features

Choosing your bet size is the first thing you need to do, and it ranges from £/€1 to £/€300. Next, you need to choose your preferred number of Montezuma mines. You can go with 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 or 15 mines, and this corresponds to 24, 23, 20, 15, 12, 8 or 5 picks, respectively. The maximum win of each round is also dependent on how many mines/picks you go with, and the number is on display in the game interface.

Aztec Gold Mines plays out on a 5x5 grid with 25 possible tiles to choose from, and each pick reveals either a mine or bet multiplier symbol.

Aztec Gold Mines Slot Gameplay

Revealing a mine ends the round, and it means you lose all racked up winnings. You increase your total win by revealing bet multipliers, and you can see how much the next bet multiplier is worth before you make your pick. You can also keep track of your total win, and the total number of bet multipliers revealed so far.

You can choose to Cash Out at any time, and the goal of the game is to cash out before you reveal a mine. The max win varies between 24x and 288x your stake, and more mines doesn’t necessarily equal a higher max win. It does, however, mean that the bet multiplier accelerates more quickly towards higher numbers per pick.

You get the highest possible RTP by making only 1 pick no matter the amount of mines you choose up front.

If you go with 1 mine and make only 1 pick, the RTP is 98.88 %, for example, and the lowest possible RTP is 96 %, which isn’t all that bad either.

Review Summary

Audiovisually, you will be reminded of iSoftBet’s smash hit dynamic reels release, Aztec Gold Megaways, and you get some nice snake and tiger animations on either side of the grid. The gameplay itself isn’t all that exciting though, and it would probably be a good idea to introduce some features in future installments. Gonzo's Treasure Hunt can be an inspiration in that regard, as the possibility for larger prizes would probably go down well with players.

Simply picking what amounts to very small prizes until you eventually hit a mine, or cash out, just isn’t entertaining compared to a feature rich slot with plenty of moving parts. Besides, you kind of feel like a “chicken” when you cash out, so it doesn’t really make you feel like a winner. Aztec Gold Mines is a decent warm up game to the Megaways version, or perhaps a game to wind down with, but we don’t see the concept becoming very successful in the current format.

Pros

  • Bet between £1 and £300 per round

  • Max win of 288x is very low
  • No features or modifiers

Gold Digger Mines - is iSoftBet’s minesweeper inspired debut, and it’s part of their popular mining slot series. You’ll thus join the charming prospector Gus in his gold digging efforts, and the gameplay is very similar to the game at hand. The math model is the same also.

Gonzo's Treasure Hunt Live - is a highly successful installment in the iconic Gonzo range, and this Evolution Gaming Live Game is co-hosted by the conquistador himself.

You’re taken into an AR-version of the Incan temple complex, and it’s basically a massive stone wall pick game with prize drops and multipliers that can lead to 20,000x payouts from a single tile.

Coin Miner - is a Gaming Corps installment in the minesweeper-inspired genre, and you get to choose up to 24 bombs in this release. It plays out on a 5x5 grid also, and each pick can reveal a round ending bomb, or increase your total win, similar to what goes on in the game at hand.
