Taco Brothers Derailed Review

The original Taco Brothers was quite a charmer when it was released back in 2015, and Taco Brothers Derailed is a welcome reunion with the 3 brothers, the Señorita and the evil Captain Diaz. You’ll return once again to the dusty small town of Santa Maria, but the backdrop this time is the gold rush of 1881. Gold, tacos and trains are all the rage, so a good old-fashioned train heist is on the trio's agenda.

As you can imagine, everything is bigger and bolder in this sequel, including the 6x4 grid, the math model and the visual experience as such. You get plenty of walking wild action in all stages of the game, this time with multipliers and symbols-to-wild transformations as well. There are 2 different bonus round tiers, and both go on indefinitely as long as at least one of the brothers remains walking across the grid without being arrested.

Taco Brothers Derailed Slot Features

The 3 brothers serve as the premium symbols, and they pay 5x, 10x and 50x your stake for 6 of a kind, respectively. Wilds are definitely on the menu in this game in different ways, and they all substitute for pay symbols to help complete wins at bare minimum. The regular ‘W’ wild does exactly that, and we’ll take a look at the feature wilds below.

All 3 of the taco brothers can land as Walking Wilds on occasions, and as a walking wild they move one step to the left per respin that follows.

The feature ends when the walking wild walks off the grid to the uttermost left, and all matching taco brother symbols are turned wild when they appear during the walking wild respins feature. The multiplier of the walking wild(s) may vary per spin.

You can also land a Walking Multiplier Wild on the top row only, and it will move one step to the left per respin as well. The x5 multiplier it carries is cloned to all regular wilds that land during the respins that follow, until the walking multiplier wild walks off the grid on the left-hand side.

The Taco Train Heist Bonus Round triggers when you land 3 bonus scatters on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5, and you are guaranteed to get all 3 taco brothers as walking wilds one after the other starting on reel 6. The walking wild multiplier brother awards a respin per step as usual, and the multiplier value can vary per step/respin. The bonus round goes on as long as you have active taco brothers walking.

The evil Captain Diaz can appear on reel 1 at any time, and he will imprison the walking wild brother closest to reel 1.

This turns the position into a worthless blocker tile, and it also means there is no multiplier transference to the next brother. If a taco brother walks off the grid successfully however, the multiplier is added to whatever multiplier the next brother carries. The Señorita symbol unlocks imprisoned taco brothers, or sends the closest one to reel 1 back to reel 6. She also neutralizes Diaz, and turns him into a wild.

Landing 4 bonus scatters in the base game awards the top-tier Taco Smash N’ Grab Bonus Round. This gives you all 3 taco brothers stacked on reel 6 as walking multiplier wilds. You also get a walking multiplier wild symbol on the top row of reel 6, and the whole stack moves in lockstep to the left per respin. Captain Diaz is now wild, and cannot arrest taco brothers. The Señorita uses her magnetic charm to pull a single taco brother back to reel 6, and the feature ends when the last brother walks off the grid to the left.

As usual with ELK, you get the X-iter feature menu packed with goodies, but this feature is not available for UK players (or in all jurisdictions).

Review Summary

The watershed between ELK’s ‘“old” and modernized style is as evident in this sequel as it was in Wild Toro 2. Taco Brothers Derailed comes with all the charm of the original release, and then some, and we very much appreciate the backstory that gives you a frame for all the wild action. As you can expect with so many years between the two, you get both upgraded visuals, enhanced features and a bigger and bolder math model.

At the core of everything is the taco brother walking wilds, but they now turn matching symbols wild as well. Multipliers are also introduced in different ways to take everything to the next level, and the 10,000x potential is way above what you got in the original.

Both bonus rounds are highly entertaining and unpredictable, but the 95 % RTP may be a dealbreaker for some. We would encourage ELK to implement RTP ranges instead, so players at least have a chance at 96+ % theoretical returns at some casinos.

Pros

  • Taco Brother Walking Wilds Respins
  • x5 Walking Multiplier Wild Respins
  • Taco Train Heist Bonus Round
  • Taco Smash N’ Grab Super Bonus Round
  • X-iter feature buy menu (not UK)
  • Win up to 10,000x your stake

Cons

  • RTP of 95 % is well below average

If you love Taco Brothers Derailed Slot you should also try:

Taco Brothers - is the original ELK smash hit, and it’s well worth a try for nostalgic reasons if nothing else. You get a more lighthearted medium volatility, as well as a decent 96.3 % RTP in this taco adventure though, and it’s all about running taco brother wilds trying to escape the evil Diaz. The max win is 1,500x your stake, so it cannot really compete in that regard.

Wild Toro 2 - is the beefed up follow-up to ELK’s wildly successful original, and you get matador wilds that expand the reels up to 8 rows in height. This triggers the hallmark walking wild respins feature, and you can get multipliers and toro goes berserk modifiers as well. The max win is 10,000x your stake.

Nitropolis 3 - is another grand follow-up in a highly popular ELK series, and this one takes you to a toxic post-apocalyptic beach. Cascading wins adds extra rows to the grid, and you get plenty of explosive and massive modifiers, including sticky nitro reels in the bonus round.
